The wheel-end assembly is a critical component of a heavy-duty axle. It mainly consists of the wheel hub, bearings, oil seals, ring gears, and fasteners, directly supporting vehicle loads and transmitting driving torque. Operating under long-term heavy loads and complex working conditions, the condition of the wheel-end assembly has a significant impact on vehicle safety and overall driving reliability.
One of the most common failures of wheel-end assemblies is abnormal bearing wear or bearing seizure. The main causes include insufficient lubrication, lubricant contamination, improper bearing preload adjustment, or prolonged operation under overload conditions. During maintenance, special attention should be paid to the bearing raceways and roller surfaces for signs of spalling, discoloration, or scoring. If any abnormalities are found, the bearings should be replaced as a complete set, and bearing clearances must be adjusted strictly in accordance with technical specifications.
Oil leakage at the wheel end is another common issue and is typically related to aged oil seals, improper installation, or damage to the hub end face. During repair, the oil seal lip should be inspected for wear, and the seal spring for loss of tension, while also ensuring correct installation position and orientation. If scratches or corrosion are found on the hub end face, the affected components should be repaired or replaced to prevent premature failure of newly installed oil seals.
In addition, loose wheel-end fasteners can lead to hub wobble and may even cause serious safety incidents. During maintenance, wheel hub bolts and locking devices should be inspected for integrity. Fasteners must be tightened to the specified torque using a cross and symmetrical tightening sequence to ensure uniform load distribution.
Regular inspection, proper maintenance, and standardized repair of wheel-end assemblies not only extend component service life but also effectively reduce operational risks and enhance overall vehicle reliability.
